Psychological Stress and How It May Hurt You and Your Performance
Stressed
out and planning on blowing off some steam at the gym? Be careful. Football players
under high academic stress were more likely to be injured according to a study by
The Journal of Strength and Conditioning. During a 20-week season for a
Division 1 college football team, researchers studied weekly injury reports for
101 student athletes. Players were 3.19 times more likely to have an injury
during weeks of high academic stress and 2.84 times more likely during weeks of
high physical stress and low academic stress.
The scientists aren’t sure if stress causes injury, but it’s interesting to
note that psychological stress may lead to the occurrence of physical injuries.
Next time you’re at the gym and extremely stressed out, try yoga instead.
