Since When Is It Okay To Freely Smoke Pot In Public?
I was recently driving on Flamingo and
Las Vegas Boulevard, windows down, enjoying the fresh spring air when I was
assaulted! The rank scent overtook my car’s interior, and left me choking. The
culprit: weed smoke. The strip was full of people smoking weed as they were
walking down the strip with children in sight.
With Nevada’s Legalization of pot, it’s
no surprise more and more people are smoking it in public. The problem: those
people are breaking the law. Nevada law specifically
states individuals are only allowed to possess and smoke one ounce of marijuana
in a private residence.
Secondhand exposure to marijuana in an unventilated
room or enclosed vehicle can cause nonsmokers to feel the effects of marijuana,
putting them at risk for minor problems with memory and coordination, according
to a new study in the Drug
and Alcohol Dependency Journal. As a result, my dad has experienced
these minor problems while working in in-room dining at the Wynn and Encore. “Every
time I walk into a party room filled with high rollers, the first thing I smell
and see is the pot they are smoking in my face, but the worst part of it all is
that I am stuck in the room for 30 minutes absorbing the marijuana that when I
leave the room I start to feel sick, tired, and less alert,” Bermudez said.
The RAND Drug Policy Research Center
experts help conduct and provide research to help decision makers in the United
States address issues involving alcohol and marijuana legalization. Nevada was
ranked no. 19 on the
Marijuana Nevada report, showing there have been fewer
marijuana arrests since recreational marijuana has been legal. Even though
there has been a decrease in marijuana-related arrests, this doesn’t mean that
people are following the rules that are tied with recreational marijuana.
At the end of the day, if you wish to
smoke pot go ahead, but please follow the rules and don’t do it out in the open
where the whole world can be affected.
